Dear Friends,
Chapter 510 is celebrating its 10th anniversary at a time of crisis in our country. When we started, we wanted Oakland youth to be seen and to have the opportunity to write in community. We couldn’t foresee that 10 years later the entire world would be struggling for a way to unite around basic human rights.
This Impact Report provides just a glimpse into the first 10 years of the Chapter 510 story. We’ve led writing workshops in every Oakland neighborhood, created multiple sanctuaries for creativity where
young people are centered and celebrated, and built lifetime relationships with families, children, artists, teachers, donors, and activists.
In the past decade, thanks to the remarkable community that has shown up to support young writers in Oakland, Chapter 510 has grown into a place of many meanings. Today, it is more necessary than we ever could have imagined.
We’ve proudly published beautiful books because publishing conjures what is possible: liberation, transformation and bringing radical ideas to life. Publishing has been our window inside the workshop and invites the reader into the conversation, building community and understanding.
The best of us is in these pages, and there’s more to come. We celebrate this anniversary and reflect on what we’ve created, thanks to you – and we’ve just gotten started. We have a lot of work to do, both here in Oakland and as a broader community of those who fight for justice and freedom.
