BEND LIKE WATER
RELEASED OCT, 2021

"From a chance encounter on a flight to an ode to hair, these poems are filled with honest reflections on life. May these young poets always remember the humor, heritage, and insight they displayed throughout this collection." - Greer Nakadegawa-Lee, 2020 Oakland Youth Poet Laureate

In the chaotic midst of 2020, a sixth-grade poetry workshop was led over the course of seven months by poet and teaching artist Perla Yasmeen Meléndez. How do you wear your name? What stories are written into your hair? What lives deep in the pockets of your memory? These were some of the questions offered to the young poets. The poems are windows into their ruminant and luminous answers. While you read them, see if you can spot your own reflection.

IMAGINATE
BY ANIYA BUTLER

…We hold our power
When we hold a pen
When are we with you
There are a room full of grins
We write
Create
And imaginate our dreams…
