Come sit side-by-side with a high school senior and help them write the college essay that will get them into the school they deserve! Join us for our fall First Friday events at our writing center as part of the Oakland First Friday street festival. We will welcome our community in for storytime with local children’s book authors (many of our own young writers included) from 6pm-7pm followed by a teen open mic from 7:30-8:30 hosted by poet Rae’Chel Stanley. There will be a writing workshop starting at 6pm for teens, as well as bookmaking activities for all. DJ XCAIROCITOSX will be spinning tunes and tacos will be available at Two Mamacitas Pop-up Kitchen all night.

Chapter Book Writing Workshop

Have a great idea for a book? Write one and have it published at Chapter 510 at our 12-week Chapter Book Writing Workshop with author of the Midnight Stories collection Tiffany Golden. This workshop is for young authors ages 10-12

All writers will be paired with a local author as their editorial mentor, and their very own illustrator for their book cover, and will get to celebrate a beautifully published chapter book at our Children’s Book Fair in June.

This is a free workshop limited to 5 youth.

When: Saturdays, 10am-1pm, Nov 17 - March 9

Tiffany Golden was trained in Motion Picture Production at the Academy of Art University where she found a love for writing. She is the author of the Midnight Story Series, a children’s fantasy series and currently a Creative Writing MFA candidate at Spalding University in Louisville, KY. In addition to her own work, Tiffany has passionately worked with school-aged youth for over 15 years in an effort to support them in sharing their voices.

Black Joy: A Young Men's Writing Workshop

Chapter 510 is hosting a 10-week poetry writing workshop for young black men, ages 13-18 led by teaching artist Daniel B. Summerhill.

All students will be published in a new anthology by Nomadic Press. This is a free workshop limited to 10 youth.

When: Saturdays, 2pm-4:30pm, Nov 10, 17, Dec 1, 8, 15, Jan 12, 19, 26, Feb 2, 9, 16

This fall, Chapter 510 invites OUSD high school seniors to attend our Monday writing labs to support your college entrance essays. Why? Because the application process can be complicated or overwhelming and we have a lot of volunteers who have time and expertise to help you get it done.

Whether you are applying for scholarships or writing college entrance essays, still brainstorming or in the initial  stages of writing—come get FREE one-on-one help from Chapter 510's friendly tutors on Mondays October 29, November 5, 26, December 3, 10, and 17 from 4pm to 7pm. Pizza dinner provided!
