Making Oakland a Hotspot for Youth Creativity, Writing, and Joy!
WE BELIEVE WRITING IS AN ACT OF LIBERATION. We want every young person in Oakland to write with confidence and joy.
Hundreds of YOUNG OAKLANDERS come to Chapter 510 each semester to pen poems, write stories, and produce podcasts in our FREE programs. They have something big and brave to share with the world.
After writing countless drafts and taking in feedback from our teaching artists, mentors, and each other, students are READY TO SEE THE RESULTS OF THEIR WRITING – with your help! Friends, let’s help them become PUBLISHED authors and podcasters:
Donate to keep our creative writing programs free!
Sign up for Chapter 510’s e-newsletter to hear the latest and get inspired.
Apply to become a writing mentor to work one-on-one with a young, creative mind.
Hear and see our youth in action! Listen to Sound Space podcasts by and for Oakland teens; visit our Dept. of Make / Believe storefront (open on weekends) to see 100+ beautifully illustrated books by our amazing young writers; and attend an upcoming event at our beautiful youth space in Swan's Market in Old Oakland.
It’s life changing to become a published writer. Our students are on their way! In surveys, 96% of our graduates say that:
Their writing has gotten much better.
Writing makes them happy.
They want to do the work it takes to become a good writer.
Our alumni include Leila Mottley, a NYT Bestselling novelist, and Aniya Butler, a teen named one of the “2022 Voices of the Year” by Seventeen for her poetry and climate change activism.
Please, support us to ensure youth can gather, learn, and create for FREE! Thank you!
