Become a Writing Mentor for Oakland Youth

Every young person participating in our writing workshops is paired with a dedicated writing mentor!

Mentors work one on one with them throughout the year to write, revise, and finalize poems, stories, and sometimes entire novels! We offer our Writing Mentors honorariums or the opportunity to waive the honorarium and mentor as a volunteer.

In addition to Writing Mentors, we are also looking for paid and volunteer illustrators, artists, and designers to help bring our young authors stories and books to life.

How to become a Chapter 510 MENTOR OR ARTIST

If you are a writer or artist who has a passion for youth we invite you to join our community of radical, magical mentors and illustrators!

We welcome and invite folks who have traditionally been under represented from the arts to mentor students who are currently facing the same uphill battles of representation.

Below you can find a link to our current paid mentorship and artist opportunities, and a link to our mentor interest form, as well. If there aren’t any current opportunities, you can still fill out the form to get added to our mentor mailing list!

Things we require from all our mentors and artists:

  • A negative TB test

  • A background check

  • Attendance at training sessions with our staff and Teaching Artists so you have all you need to empower and inspire our youth.
