First Friday: Children's Storytellers Series and Teen Poetry Open Mic

  • Chapter 510 and the Dept of Make Believe 2301 Telegraph Ave Oakland, CA 94612 USA (map)

First Friday is back and we’re ready to go! We have two programs that we just know you will love: a storytelling by local children's book author Melissa Reyes, reading from her amazing book, "I Am Sausal Creek," and a teen poetry open mic.

“I Am Sausal Creek” is a bilingual English and Spanish picture book about the history of Oakland told through the voice of a local waterway. Melissa Reyes is an educator, writer, doula, and medicine maker based in Oakland, CA. She is deeply committed to justice, liberation, and healing.

* Storytelling begins promptly at 6:30pm *

Bring your poems, verses, spoken word pieces and prose to share at our Teen Open Mic, hosted by Vice Oakland Youth Poet Laureate Samuel Getachew.

Sign up begins at 7pm. First seven poets who sign up are guaranteed a spot in the open mic. Open mic begins at 7:30pm.
